Campbell Street Kitchen
Finding Charm in Historic, Downtown Homes
Our client’s home on Campbell Street was abundant with the charm and character you often find in older homes in Downtown Harrisonburg. However, our clients were seeking help with their outdated kitchen that needed a major update. Working in these older, Downtown homes, we sometimes run into a few of the same challenges and the Campbell Street kitchen was no exception.
Nailing Down the Layout
Firstly, we needed to address the overall layout of the kitchen. There was a set of stairs in the kitchen that led to the second floor, which made the space feel cramped and disjointed. We considered their impact in the kitchen layout and how useful, or perhaps insignificant, they were for our clients. We ultimately made the decision to remove that set of stairs entirely. This not only made the kitchen feel significantly larger, but it also gave our clients ample counter and storage space, which they drastically lacked beforehand.
Striking a Balance in the Renovation
The next challenge was one that we often run into while working with clients in older, historic builds with as much character as this Campbell Street home. We needed to come up with a design that struck a balance between the charm of an older home and modern appliances and design elements our clients desired. We worked alongside the clients to come up with a design that incorporated some modern elements while still maintaining the home’s charm.
Design Elements That Bring It All Together
The walls were painted a soft green, which complemented the natural light that flooded the space. New white cabinets were installed which gave the kitchen a fresh, clean look. We added glass hardware to the cabinets, which added a touch of elegance and helped to keep the vintage feel. Our client was particularly excited about the fish scale tiles that we installed as a backsplash. They added a subtle texture and a touch of whimsy to the space, which perfectly matched their personality.
A New Space for Entertaining
This Campbell Street kitchen remodel project came together perfectly in the end. The beautiful new layout of their kitchen and large peninsula counters are going to allow for plenty of collaborative cooking and entertaining friends and family. And the new design accentuates the home’s character, while also ties in more modern design elements to fit the client’s style. We are so pleased with the outcome of this remodel project and can’t wait to share more of our renovations with you!
