A Galapagos-Inspired Bathroom Transformation
Revitalizing an Old Home for the Modern Era
We recently had the opportunity to reinvent an old and outdated bathroom into a modern oasis, blending vintage charm with contemporary allure. The original bathroom, frozen in time with dated tiles and peeling velvet wallpaper, posed a significant challenge. Years of moisture had taken their toll, confirming that the bathroom needed a complete overhaul.
Repairing a Home, Not Just a Bathroom
During demolition, it was discovered that the chimney on the exterior wall had a large hole in it that compromised the structural integrity of the entire chimney and posed a large fire hazard to the home. To allow use of the fireplace on the lower level, we first repaired the brick and mortar before moving on to the rest of the room. After our team completely stripped the bathroom down to the studs, we replaced the mostly rotted sub-flooring. Plumbing and electrical fixtures were updated to ensure the safety and longevity of the bathroom going forward.
Designing for Practicality and Adventure
When it came to finding a new ambiance for the updated bathroom, the family found inspiration in the wonders of the Galapagos Islands. Opting for a wallpaper showcasing the archipelago's unique beauty, they brought a touch of nature indoors. The terra-cotta hue extracted from the wallpaper became the perfect choice for the bathroom walls, infusing warmth and character. For the flooring, practicality met elegance with 12x24 marble-look porcelain tiles, which are easy to clean and maintain. Preserving the vintage charm, the original windows were retained, framing the newly designed space and infusing it with a sense of history. The juxtaposition of modern elements with classic features created a timeless and harmonious atmosphere.
