Vintage Revival of a Kitchen and Bathroom

Clearing the Clutter

Transforming a space to make it both functional and reflective of a homeowner’s personality is work we take true pride in. This home featured a cramped kitchen with limited counter space, a wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room, and a poorly placed powder room door that opened directly into the kitchen. Additionally, there was an enclosed porch that had untapped potential. Our goal was to reconfigure these spaces to better suit our client, Ali’s, vintage-inspired style. You might know her as the owner of Heartworn Vintage in the Agora Shops in downtown Harrisonburg, VA.

Improving an Existing Space

To create a more open and cohesive living area, we started by removing the wall that divided the kitchen from the dining room. This simple yet impactful change enhanced the flow between the two spaces, allowing for better connectivity and a more spacious feel. We also added a peninsula, which serves as an additional workspace, a casual dining spot, and a gathering area for entertaining.

The kitchen itself received a complete overhaul, with new cabinets in a soft gray shade, complemented by sleek black quartz countertops. The calming mint green backsplash adds a subtle contrast while maintaining the vintage charm. We installed open shelving to showcase the client’s collection of vintage items, adding a personal touch to the space.

Functionality and a Fresh Look

To address the awkward layout of the powder room, we relocated the door. This change also helped to improve the flow and functionality of the kitchen. The bathroom received a full makeover, with carefully chosen vintage-style fixtures. These details, combined with the overall design, created a bathroom that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

We transformed the enclosed porch into a conditioned mudroom, featuring patterned tiles that complement the color scheme of the rest of the home. This new space now serves as a practical entryway, providing ample storage for coats, shoes, and bags while maintaining the vintage aesthetic that runs throughout the home.

True Reflection of Style

Our client's passion for vintage pieces acted as the guide through this renovation design process. Their home now has the same eclectic and charming vibe, with each room telling a story through its unique design elements.

Despite the challenges of completing this project during the uncertainty of 2020, the end result is a space that not only meets the practical needs of the homeowner but also captures their love for vintage-inspired design.
